Neighbourhood Watch started in the U.S.A. in the early 1970's and began in this country in 1982, and in the Capital in 1983 as part of the then Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Kenneth Newman's Corporate Strategy for reducing crime and the fear of crime in the Capital.

Why Neighbourhood Watch

It has long been recognised that the Police alone can not combat or solve all crime and need the help of the general public to act as their ears and eyes in the continuous fight against crime and the criminal. Whether you live in a flat, house, bungalow, in the High Street, suburban street or cul-de-sac, you can all play a part in assisting the Police reduce crime.

What is Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch is about caring, caring about your own personal property and the safety of your families, it is about caring about your neighbours, looking after their homes whilst they are away on holiday, by giving the appearance that the property is occupied.

It is about marking all your valuable property in the manner recommended by the Police.

Conforming to basic home security, ensuring that you have adequate locks on your external doors, all ground floor and accessible windows having secondary locking devises. In reporting any suspicious behaviour, characters, vehicles or persons.

In conforming to the principles of Neighbourhood Watch and taking an active part whether as an ordinary member or street co-ordinator.

It is not enough to want to become a member of NHW because you may be able to obtain a discount on you house contents insurance. It must be for a genuine desire to improve or at least maintain the quality of life in the area in which you live.

It is beyond dispute that Neighbourhood Watch Schemes do reduce crime and therefore the fear of crime but unless they are well structured and are started on a firm and solid foundation they will be doomed to failure.

Any reduction in crime depends on the long term success not short term success of any scheme.
