Crime Prevention Advice For The Summer
The summer season brings with
it unique issues and challenges. Members of the public should be reminded
of a few extra simple steps they can take during the summer months to stop
them from becoming a victim of crime.
Security in the Home:
During warm weather people like
to keep cool, however it is important not to invite burglars into your home
by leaving windows open:
Do not leave accessible windows
open particularly in unattended rooms. Most PVC windows have a catch facility
to lock them in a position that still allows ventilation, but also prevents
anyone gaining access.
Do not leave goods such as laptops
on display to people outdoors.
Recently there has been a number of letterbox burglaries so do not leave keys,
including car keys, within reach or on display to a burglar.
Record serial numbers of your
property using www.immobilise.com
you may also wish to consider marking your property by etching or with a permanent
marker pen, as it is often the case that when police recover stolen property
they are unable to identify whom it belongs to. UV markers are good for arts
and antiques, but visible marking has the benefit of deterring the offender
as he/she will know the property is harder to move on.
When going to bed ensure your front door is deadlocked, being careful not to compromise a fire route. If needs be, store the key nearby, in a position where it can't be seen or reached from outside. If you only have a night latch ensure you put the catch on.
You may wish to consider adding
or changing it to a lock of enhanced security - British Standard 3621.
Senior citizens should ensure that any strangers coming to their doors claiming
to be workmen have the correct identification.
There has been a recent trend
of distraction burglaries whereby suspects have claimed to be carrying-out
water repairs for the local council. As well as asking for the correct identification,
residents can check with the local council whether maintenance works are happening
in their area. Anyone believing they have let a distraction burglar into their
home should note the suspect's vehicle registration number - if they have
one, when they are leaving and then tell police.
